Everything Is An Argument

“Everything is an argument”

Before we get into this, what is an argument?

It is a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong.

My English teacher cleared up the air with saying that it wasn’t where you yell at people about something but better yet where you critically think and take a position. You are given an opinion and have to back it up with evidence. It is a form of persuasion and debate.

He told us we had to read things and that everything was readable. You can read a picture, a room, or a person. This wasn’t hard for me since I already read into things way too much. Over analyzing and trying to figure things out. All I had to do now is learn how to apply it.

With an argument you have to take a stance, you have to make an assertion about something that can either be proven right or wrong.  Everything is trying to tell you something, whether you choose to listen or not is up to you. However, if you take a closer look and fight a little harder to try and see for you self then you will be amazed.

At the beginning of the school year my English teacher had us look around the classroom and make a statement on what the class room was arguing. Our class came to the conclusion that it was arguing that it was inviting and allowed for creative learning, for your thoughts to be open. It wasn’t your typical classroom with two separate doors leading in and out, it was bigger than most, and had many different posters around the room. The classroom was trying to persuade everyone that walked in that it was different.

I wanted to take a closer look at one of my favorite ads and see what it argues. This commercial gives so many reasons why we should want this truck. It starts off with a montage of a women and her horse, it is relatable to the audience it is speaking to. It then goes into talking about not just any women but a cowgirl with clips of what a normal cowgirl would be doing. It shows all the places this woman goes and all the places this woman takes her truck. This whole commercial argues that a pickup truck can be for a woman too; in fact it tells you exactly why it is right that this pickup truck is for a woman.

Every day we are trying to make an argument, trying to persuade something is right. Next time you do or say something, think:

What argument am I trying to make?
